Last week, I started shopping for two weeks instead of weekly. So the Bi-weekly grocery list ended up costing about $107. So I figure the monthly bill will average about 200, which is not bad for a family of five. I still buy hygienic items as needed and other household items. These are not included in this post, I typically buy generic or whichever is the best deal. I also buy generic cereals, which save

Meal Planning Before the Trip
I have a family of 5, and they eat so much that the family size lasagna is laughed at. I always forget about that, for a while I actually stopped buying lasagna because it ranges between 10-15 dollars for the box.
I usually aim for each meal to be around $5, I also aim for convenience of how fast it cooks and ensuring everyone eats the meal. My meals include alot of pasta and grains, so if you cannot eat pasta or grains it’ll be a little challenging to put it options that do not have these items.
First thing I do before even considering when or how I’m shopping for groceries is a meal plan. So this week, I went to the library and checked out the $5 mom meal plan book. In the near future, I plan to purchase this book. This by far is the best reference I’ve used for meal planning.
The meal plans consisted of Beef and rice casserole, Southwest chicken salad, and goulash(my favorite). The book has
My other go to are the Oncor meals you find in the freezer section at the grocery store. They average $3 a package and you can just whip up pasta or rice to go with it. Some of them go really well with fries. Fries cost less than $2 a bag from
Walmart Grocery App
I like to use the Walmart grocery app to ensure the shopping list is not deviated from. Impulse buys are the worst thing for your grocery bill. Using the Walmart grocery app allows me to add necessities to the list up until the day before or the morning of depending on when I want to pick them up. Which is helpful when you’re terrible about keeping grocery lists around.
If you’re interested in trying out the grocery app, you can get $10 off your order of $50 or more! Please use my referral code for getting your first order to get this offer. Click here.
The Nitty-Gritty- How I save
So, how exactly do i get that grocery bill so low?
This may or may not agree with your dietary restrictions or family’s needs. I am simply providing the steps I take for my family. I plan for five nights each week of actual cooking.
Two nights are dedicated to leftovers or ramen. That probably saves at least $25. That may not sound like much, but it adds up. Ramen costs anywhere between .15-.25 each so 5 packets of ramen for a dollar? Yes, please. Either that or eating
The other nights I like to use ground beef or chicken due to it’s lower cost than other meat types. For ground beef, I buy the one pound rolls of frozen beef for about $2.88. For those that need a higher percentage, I would buy a larger package, the rolls are typically cheaper and just cut it up in one pound increments(approximately), then freeze them. It’s best to defrost about 24 hours before you need it in the refrigerator. With chicken I started buying the frozen breasts, they average $1.99 a pound like this. I don’t like the store packaging because of the chicken blood getting everywhere. I find the pre-frozen is more convenient and less worry about the blood getting everywhere. The bags are re-sealable like
I almost always get the Oncor meals at least for a few times a week, they are simple and the kids always enjoy them. My favorites are chicken parmagiana, which can be paired with pasta. This meal averages less than $5. The other great one is the
The other way I save- Beverages
Most people purchase cans of soda and bottles, this creates a lot of waste and these drinks are unhealthy. I like to buy mixes for making kool-aid, buy generic juices and buy gallons of water rather than the bottles. Not buying water bottles not only save
